Backup and data recovery

Data loss happens — disk failure, ransomware, accidental deletion, fire in the server room. This page describes how we approach backups and what that means in practice for your business.

File and system backups

Backup of operating systems, applications, and user data — whether on physical servers, virtual machines, or workstations. We configure what gets backed up, how often, and how long copies are retained.

Local and cloud backup

Local copies allow fast recovery; cloud copies protect against physical disasters. We typically combine both using the 3-2-1 principle: 3 copies, on 2 different media types, 1 offsite.

Recovery testing

A backup that has never been tested is an unknown. We periodically test recovery to find out how long it actually takes and whether the copy is usable — before you need it.

Defined recovery objectives

RPO (how much data you can afford to lose) and RTO (how long you can afford to be down) are business decisions, not technical ones. We help you define them, then design a solution that meets them.

Common questions

How often are backups taken?

It depends on how much data you can afford to lose in the worst case. For most businesses that's somewhere between once a day and once a week. Critical systems can be backed up more frequently. This is one of the first things we agree on before setting up a solution.

How quickly can we recover?

That depends on data size, network speed, and whether you're recovering to the same or new hardware. Local backup typically means hours; cloud backup can mean longer. That's why we test in advance — so you know the real number, not an estimate.

Does backup protect against ransomware?

It does, but only if copies are isolated from the production network. Ransomware often tries to destroy the backup copies it can reach. That's why the combination matters: local backup with an air gap or offline copies, plus cloud backup with versioning.
